The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book limited series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill.  Set in late 1800's Britain (my favorite setting for anything) the British government, as it has done in the past, creates a team of individuals with certain talents to protect the crown & empire.  All of these individuals happen to be actual characters of literature.  If your only experience with this material is the film, ignore the film (which is terrible when compared to this work) and read this series.

Wilhelmina "Mina" Harker is a fictional character in Bram Stoker's horror novel Dracula.

Allan Quatermain is a fictional character, the protagonist of H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines and its various sequels and prequels.

Captain Nemo is a fictional character featured in Jules Verne's novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and The Mysterious Island (1874).

The Invisible Man is a famous 1897 science fiction novella by H.G. Wells.
